Porta potty calculator
Enter guests or workers, hours and alcohol to get a unit count. The calculator uses the BaseRoute planning method for events and the Cal/OSHA minimum for crews. It also tells you when to add an accessible unit and hand washing stations.
Assumptions for events: 1 unit per 50 guests up to 4 hours, 1 per 35 for 4–8 hours and 1 per 25 for 8–12 hours, rounded up. Add 1 per 100 guests with alcohol, at least 1. Crews: Cal/OSHA 1526 and 3457, 1 per 20 workers, fewer than 5 workers share 1.
Worked example: a 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar
A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar needs 6 standard units. Start with 150 ÷ 35 = 4.3, which rounds up to 5 units for a 4–8 hour event. Add 1 unit because alcohol is served. Make 1 unit wheelchair-accessible if any guest may need it, and add 2 hand washing stations for food.
Swap 3 standard units for 1 two-room restroom trailer if the venue has power.
Worked example: a 12-person framing crew
A 12-person framing crew needs 1 toilet by Cal/OSHA, since 12 is under 20. With weekly service, 1 unit handles about 10 workers, so plan 2 units or 1 unit with service twice a week. If the crew includes women, the rule counts each sex separately, so plan 1 unit for each.

Accessible units and hand washing
Public events need at least 5% of the units in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, and at least 1 per cluster, under the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. Add 1 hand washing station for every 2 toilets when food is served. Farm crews need 1 station per 20 workers.

Porta potty count questions
These answers give unit counts for 100, 200 and 500 guests and cover women-heavy crowds, children and the cost of ordering too few.
How many porta potties for 100 people?
For 100 guests over 4 hours, plan 2 standard units. For 4 to 8 hours, plan 3. Add 1 if alcohol is served.
How many porta potties for 200 people?
For 200 guests over 4 hours, plan 4 units. For 4 to 8 hours, plan 6. With alcohol, add 2 more.
How many porta potties for 500 people?
For 500 guests over 4 hours, plan 10 units, plus 5 with alcohol. Split them into 2 or 3 clusters with 1 accessible unit each.
Do women need more units than men?
Women take longer per visit. If most guests are women, add 1 unit per 100 guests.
Do kids count as guests?
Count children as full guests. Young children visit often.
Is it bad to order too few?
Too few units means lines and full tanks before the event ends. When in doubt, add 1 unit or book a mid-event service.
