Porta Potty Placement in Winter Rain and Clay Soil

Much of Yolo and Solano County sits on clay soil that turns sticky after winter rain. A porta potty on soft ground can sink, lean or tip, and service trucks can get stuck. Here is how to place units from November to March.

Why does clay soil matter for porta potties?

Clay soil holds water and turns soft after a day of rain. A full porta potty weighs several hundred pounds, so it can sink at one corner and lean. A leaning unit is hard to use and can tip in wind. A firm, level base prevents that.

Best winter base for a porta potty

The best winter base is concrete, asphalt or compacted gravel. On dirt or lawn, set the unit on a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood or a pair of pallets. Tell us when you book and the driver brings a base. Check after storms that the unit is still level.

Wind and tie-downs

North wind events can gust hard across open Yolo fields and new subdivisions. On exposed sites, ask for stakes or tie-downs. Place units beside a building or fence when you can, and keep doors facing away from the wind.

Keep the service path open

The service truck must park within about 15 feet on firm ground every week. If your lot turns to mud, place the unit near the street edge of your lot or a gravel pad. A missed service because of mud means a full tank the next week.

Tule fog and early deliveries

Winter tule fog in the Central Valley can slow morning routes. Delivery windows may run later on fog days. Leave clear notes and mark the spot with a reflective cone so the driver can find it.
