Do You Need a Porta Potty for a Home Remodel?
Many contractors ask homeowners to rent a porta potty before a remodel starts. Here is when you need one, how long to keep it, and how to place it so neighbors and the city stay happy.

When does a remodel need a porta potty?
A remodel needs a porta potty when the home's only bathroom will be out of service. It also makes sense when the crew works while you are away, or when your contract requires one. A second bathroom in the house often makes a rental optional. Ask your contractor before demolition day.
How long should I rent it?
Rent for the full length of the work plus a few days. Porta potties for remodels bill every 28 days, so a 6-week bathroom remodel needs 2 cycles. Call for pickup 2 business days before a new cycle starts to avoid paying for a cycle you do not need.
Monthly units start at $199 per 28 days with weekly cleaning. See monthly rentals.
Where should it go?
Put the unit on your driveway or side yard on level concrete. Keep it on your own lot. In Davis, a unit in the street or on the sidewalk next to a construction site needs a City of Davis encroachment permit. Face the door away from the street and the neighbors' windows.

Do HOA rules apply?
Some Davis-area subdivisions have HOA rules about items visible from the street. A short remodel rental is usually fine, but check your CC&Rs or ask the HOA manager. Placing the unit beside the garage or behind a side gate avoids most complaints.
What about weekly cleaning?
Weekly cleaning is included. The technician pumps, cleans and restocks without you scheduling it. Keep the driveway clear on service day so the truck can park within about 15 feet.
